Parker Adventist Hospital

Submitted by GE Johnson Construction Co.

Designed by HKS Architects of Dallas and built through a joint venture with GE Johnson Construction Co. of Colorado Springs and Kitchell Contractors of Phoenix, Centura Health's 101-bed Parker Adventist Hospital is unique in its design. Interior finishes include maple and cherry woods, terrazzo, stone, aluminum and glass glazing to give this full-service medical complex a Colorado lodge feel.

Parker Adventist is one of the most high-tech medical facilities in Colorado. It was designed with the capabilities to be fully digital, allowing patients' health to be monitored regardless of their locations within the hospital.

The 210,000-sq-ft hospital's 17-month construction schedule led to conflicts in coordination and material management. Phasing the construction documents and bidding out the work in eight different phases overcame these obstacles. Cast-in-place concrete was also chosen rather than steel to speed up construction. More than 21,000 cu yds of concrete were poured in six months, expediting the schedule by two months. The facility was built as two buildings, with separate, self-performed work and different subcontractor crews for each half.

The design allows for both vertical and horizontal expansion of the hospital, and for the expansion of a 85,000-sq-ft medical office building. Expansion plans were accommodated by the placement of the tower crane pads, the concrete structure reinforcing bars on the current roof level and the temporary partitions that were installed until construction of the medical office building. The elevator also has an underslung machine room to allow for future floors.

Although Parker Adventist Hospital was a fast-track project, the design extensively used radii and sloping elements both on the interior and exterior. This configuration contributed to the mountain resort feel at the main entry to eliminate any notion of a traditional, sterile health care environment.
