Top CDOT Projects of 2003

1. T-REX

Contractor: Southeast Corridor Constructors (SECC)
Cost: $1.67 billion - Cost being shared by CDOT ($795 million) and RTD ($879 million).

Colorado's mega design-build Transportation Expansion (T-REX) Project is moving at full speed and is on schedule and within budget. The project is a unique partnership between CDOT, RTD, the Federal Highway Administration and the Federal Transit Administration. SECC is the design-build contractor for the project. SECC began work in October 2001 and is scheduled to complete the project in fall 2006. The design-build project is adding 19 miles of light rail transit and reconstructing and widening 17 miles of I-25 and I-225 in southeast metro Denver.

2. State Highway 82 - Snowmass Canyon

Contractor: Ames Construction Inc.
Cost: $100 million
Start Date: Fall 2000
Completion Date: Fall 2004

Snowmass Canyon is the final project to widen State Highway 82 between Glenwood Springs and the Aspen area. Work on the 3.5-mile segment, a smaller version of I-70 through Glenwood Canyon, includes six bridges and 37 retaining walls. Work continues on the new up-valley lanes (to Aspen) through fall 2003. The final year of work is the widening and reconstruction of the new down-valley lanes, the current SH 82.

3. North Forty

Contractor: Edward Kraemer and Sons Inc.
Cost: $63 million
Start Date: Dec. 2001
Completion Date: Late 2004

A seven-mile stretch of I-25 between State Highway 7 and State Highway 52 is being reconstructed and widened from four to six lanes. Additional improvements have been made to the I-25/Weld County Road 8 interchange, including plans for a new park-and-ride facility. As of April 2003, the new southbound lanes were complete and work was under way to finish the northbound lanes. The reconstruction of this stretch will be completed by late 2004, and additional phases that will widen I-25 from SH 52 to SH 66 will follow when funding becomes available.

I-76/I-270 Phase II and III

Cost: $21 million

Phase IV
Contractor: Hamon Contractors, Inc.
Cost: $8.5 million
Start Date: July 2001
Completion Date: Spring 2003

Multiple phases of this project are currently under way to improve the I-270/I-76 interchange. The second and third phase constructs seven new structures at the interchange and rebuilds the ramp movements from westbound I-270 to eastbound and westbound I-76. The new ramp movements allow motorists to exit to both eastbound and westbound I-76 from the right lane and were functional by June 2003. The fourth phase constructed eastbound I-270 from I-25 to York Street, including new bridge structures at I-270 over Washington Street and I-270 over Clear Creek. This portion of the project was completed in spring 2003.

Interstate 25 - Woodmen Road Interchange

Contractor: Centric-Jones Co.
Cost: $27.2 million
Start Date: January 2001
Completion Date: December 2003

The reconstruction of this major interchange in north Colorado Springs includes additional lanes on I-25, new on/off ramps, additional acceleration and deceleration lanes on I-25 between North Nevada Avenue and Academy Boulevard and additional through lanes on Woodmen Road to increase safety and enhance the signal progression on Woodmen Road between Monument Creek and Campus Drive. The new southbound lanes are complete. Work continues on northbound I-25 and on Woodmen Road, east of I-25.

Interstate 25 - Monument Interchange

Contractor: Lawrence Construction Co.
Cost: $27 million
Start Date: August 2002
Completion Date: Spring 2005
The reconstruction of this busy interchange in north El Paso County includes new on/off ramps for northbound and southbound I-25, construction of Jackson Creek Parkway, east of I-25 and south of SH 105 and a new park-and-ride lot. Work continues on the SH 105 bridge and the new ramp system. Jackson Creek Parkway is complete.

US 287 Berthoud Bypass

Contractor: Sema Construction Inc.
Cost: $26.5 million
Start Date: January 2003
Completion Date: 2006

This 5.2-mile project constructs a bypass around the town of Berthoud that extends from US 287 at Berthoud to just south of SH 60. Currently, US 287 consists of two lanes with no turn lanes or acceleration/deceleration lanes. This project will widen US 287 to four lanes and add turn lanes and accel/decel lanes that run through the center of town. In addition, four bridges will be constructed and two intersections will be improved. The construction of the bypass is the last phase of a multi-phase project that has improved a 17-mile stretch of US 287 between Broomfield and Loveland. Previous phases consisted of widening and capacity improvements along US 287.

Interstate 25 - Nevada Avenue/Tejon Street Interchange

Contractor: Lawrence Construction Co.
Cost: $25 million
Start Date: February 2001
Completion Date: Late summer 2003

This interchange reconstruction includes a number of upgrades that will improve traffic movements in this area of south Colorado Springs. In addition to increased lane capacity on I-25, the project includes new on/off-ramps, acceleration/deceleration lanes between the interchange and the US 24 interchange to the north, new bridges on I-25 and a new Nevada Avenue bridge over Fountain Creek. As of April 2003, the northbound lanes of I-25 were complete, with work remaining on the southern half of the interchange and the ramp system.

US 160 Wolf Creek Pass

Contractors:- Tunnel Phase I: Kiewit Western Co. of Littleton for $10.3 million contract amount, started in October 2000; Tunnel Phase II: ASI, RCC of Buena Vista for $12.3 million contract amount, started in April 2003

This tunnel project is the first phase of a multi-phase project to reconstruct and improve the safety on US 160 on the east side of Wolf Creek Pass. The tunnel will be open to traffic in mid-2004. The tunnel projects involve construction of a 900-ft tunnel on Wolf Creek Pass in an area called the Upper Narrows, about seven miles east of the pass summit. Explosives were used to blast the tunnel through the mountain; work on the tunnel this season will include concrete lining, portals, lighting, emergency and monitoring equipment and roadway realignment. Remaining safety improvements on this corridor between the tunnel and South Fork will be scheduled when funding becomes available.


Ken Pratt Boulevard Extension (SH 119)

Contractor: Castle Rock Construction Co.
Cost: $11.1 million
Start Date: September 2002
Completion Date: December 2003

This is the second phase of a project that will join two sections of State Highway 119 through Longmont. Ken Pratt Boulevard will be extended three miles beyond its current east termination at US 287 and will connect with State Highway 119 to the northeast. The extension will consist of three miles of new four-lane concrete pavement with a bicycle/pedestrian path running alongside, connecting with the St. Vrain Greenway. The previous phase constructed four new bridges as well as a concrete box culvert extension for Dry Creek at US 287.

US 50 Delta to Grand Junction

Contractor for Delta North: Elam Construction of Grand Junction
Cost: $11.5 million
Start Date: October 2002
Completion Date: 2004

The 34-mile corridor is being widened from two to four lanes. Three of six phases have been completed with two phases in progress, and a final phase scheduled to begin in 2006, when funding becomes available. The most recent segment to get under way begins at Delta and proceeds north for 5.1 miles to G-50 Road. This segment is scheduled for completion in 2004. The entire US 50 Delta to Grand Junction corridor is approximately 70 percent complete.

I-225/Iliff Avenue Interchange

Contractor: Sema Construction Inc.
Cost: $10.5 million
Start Date: November 2002
Completion Date: Projected for summer 2003

This interchange improvement project began in November 2002 and will replace the northbound and southbound bridges on I-225 and will also reconstruct and realign the roadway for a smoother transition onto I-225. The project will also involve some safety improvements by adding guardrail, retaining walls, and fencing at the intersection. AT project completion, westbound Iliff Avenue approaching I-225 will be wider, and the entire interchange will consist of new concrete pavement

Broadway Viaduct - Phase II

Contractor: Sema Construction Inc.
Cost: $9.8 million
Start Date: November 2002
Completion Date: May 2004

The entire project reconstructs the I-25 viaduct over Broadway, including the replacement of the I-25 bridge over Broadway. The second phase is currently under way and completes the remaining portion of the southbound bridge. Once the southbound portion is complete, traffic will be switched onto the new structure. The current phase will be completed by May 2004, leaving only one phase left to finish the northbound portion of the bridge.

US 160 Treasure Falls to Snow Shed, Wolf Creek Pass, Phase II

Contractor: Nielson's Skanska of Cortez
Cost: $7.16 million
Start Date: September 2002

During this phase, work has included rock blasting, improving the safety and sight distance of the westbound truck ramp approach, drainage improvements on the top 3.5 miles (including the snow shed) and final highway rehabilitation and paving of five miles. The project was mostly complete in October 2002, but some minor work - such as landscaping and snow shed lighting - was done in spring 2003.

U.S. 85 - State Highway 67 Intersection

Contractor: Ames Construction Inc.
Cost: $8 million
Start Date: April 2003
Completion Date: April 2004

The reconstruction of the US 85/State Highway 67 intersection will realign US 85 east of its current location through Sedalia, increasing capacity and reducing backups on SH 67 for vehicles stopped at the US 85 traffic light and at the Burlington Northern/Santa Fe railroad crossing. The current US 85 will become a frontage road. Other improvements include a new traffic signal, turn lanes, raised medians and sidewalks and a wildlife tunnel south of the intersection.
