Broadmoor South Tower Renovation Finished/Drahota Busy in Northern Colorado/Montrose's San Juan Cancer Center Completed

Following an aggressive six-month schedule, construction was completed in early May on the Broadmoor's $31 million, 137,800-sq-ft South Tower renovation - just in time for the hotel's busy summer season.

Mortenson Completes Broadmoor Remodel

Construction was completed in early May on the most recent project at the Broadmoor resort in Colorado Springs - the $31 million, 137,800-sq-ft South Tower renovation, designed by CSNA Architects and built by Denver's M. A. Mortenson Co.

In order to fit the new five-fixture bathrooms into each room, the building was expanded along the east and west facades to make larger bedroom spaces, creating a new look for the 1961 Modernist exterior. The expansion features precast concrete and metal-stud construction built against each side of the original structure.

Other highlights include the addition of balconies, ornamental railings, high-performance windows and doors, and a stucco exterior - all designed to fit with the original Italian Tuscan Revival architecture of the 1918 resort.

A new dining room was also created for the ninth-floor Penrose Room restaurant, and an exterior viewing balcony was added at the restaurant's southwest end.

Final Phase Under Way at Barbara Davis Center

Denver's JE Dunn Construction Co. began work early this summer on the 41,500-sq-ft tenant finish of the second and third floors of the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes.

The $4.8 million project on the Fitzsimons campus in Aurora, scheduled for completion later this year, will accommodate clinical, lab and office space.

JE Dunn completed construction last year on the four-story, 113,000-sq-ft building - the largest pediatric diabetes facility in the country focused on clinical and advanced diabetes research. Core-and-shell work was completed on the second and third floors during the original build-out.

Sugar3 Building Aims to Sweeten LoDo

Colorado-based Urban Villages received approval from the Lower Downtown Design Review Board on the plans for Sugar3, a 10-story, mixed-use building that will be located on the corner of 16th and Blake Streets in Denver.

Adjacent to the Historic Sugar Building, owned by an affiliate of Urban Villages, the 197,000-sq-ft building will consist of retail space, high-end office space and luxury residential apartments.

The building was designed by Toronto-based Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg Architects, led by Bruce Kuwabara and Shirley Blumberg.

Construction is expected to begin in September and finish in January 2008.

San Juan Cancer Center Completed at Montrose Memorial

GE Johnson Construction Co. has completed the San Juan Cancer Center at Montrose Memorial Hospital. The $4 million, 14,600-sq-ft center will offer radiation and medical oncology and chemotherapy services.

The contractor teamed with H+L Architecture for the design-build project. Construction began in June 2005 and was completed in April.

Parkwood Homes Creating Stapleton's Nantucket Close

Parkwood Homes is introducing a new neighborhood-within-a-neighborhood at Stapleton: the Nantucket Close, located near 23rd Avenue and Central Park Avenue.

The Nantucket Close is a replica of a neighborhood design that originated in the British Isles. It's centered around a "close," a road in front of stately homes for carriages to turn around in a small landscaped space.

Highlights include a private roadway lined with trees; a brick sidewalk to bring guests to front entries lit with gas coach lamps; a wrap-around alley offering private garage access; and fully landscaped yards with shade trees, hedges, shrubs and picket fences.

The first of 10 homes in the development will become available this summer.

Fountains Making a Big Splash at Centerra

Riviera Electric's service department completed the electrical installation of the outdoor entertainment area for the Promenade Shops at Centerra in Loveland.

Riviera's partners on the project included the general contractor, Hoar Construction, and subcontractors such as Colorado Hardscapes and Monarch Pool. The firm's own team included Mike King, project manager; Kelly Kalcevic, project coordinator; Mark Simpson, project superintendent.

Great Walls Installs Sound Barrier in New Neighborhood

Great Wall Systems LLC and Kurowski Development Co. teamed up to build a sound barrier and privacy wall protecting Denver's Greenwood Reserve at Cherry Creek.

The system, comprised of precast panels and columns, is unique in the Denver market. Each 12-ft by 8-ft panel weighs up to 8,500 lbs and has a stone masonry texture on both sides. The wall was finished with a long-lasting concrete stain.

The environment was a key consideration throughout the planning of the five-acre Greenwood Reserve at Cherry Creek. In order to save as many trees as possible, a plan was designed to prevent overlot grading, which meant the use of low-impact ponds to reduce the amount of stormwater runoff into county facilities.

Flatiron Designing and Building $348M Mississippi River Bridge

Audubon Bridge Constructors, a joint venture led by Longmont's Flatiron Constructors, was chosen by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development to design and construct a new $348 million cable-stayed bridge across the Mississippi River in Louisiana.

Flatiron Constructors is leading the Audubon Bridge Constructors team, a joint venture with Granite Construction and Parsons Transportation Group.

The new John James Audubon Bridge will replace the ferry system currently in place, connecting St. Francisville and New Roads just north of Baton Rouge. Work for the project includes 12 miles of roadway approaches that tie the bridge into U.S. Highway 61 and Louisiana Route 10. The main cable-stayed span will stretch 1,583 ft across the Mississippi River to become the longest cable-stayed bridge in North America.

The official groundbreaking took place in May; the bridge is slated to open in early 2010.
